- singing Jenny about Perth, Australia on Tue, 10 Feb 1976
Yes the venue was Subiaco Oval and the support was Split Enz (though I didn't think highly of them at that time). My main memory was that Santana was judged a bit loud by surrounding residents especially as it got later into the evening. Apparently, complaints were made, but all we knew was that suddenly the power was turned off! The crowd were not amused, but all the guys in Santana simply picked up acoustic instruments and continued playing, just staying in the groove. I cannot be sure for how long, from memory 10-20 minutes, but as they showed no signs of stopping, suddenly the power came back on. Seamlessly they segued into Black Magic Woman to rapturous applause from the crowd. (Now I'd have understood it if the noise of the applause was the cause for complaint - could any footy final crowd have been noisier?). It was simply AWESOME!

If you have never seen Santana you owe it to yourself to see this iconic legend. At age 68 I would have expected Carlos to have slowed down a bit. NOT the case! He still had all the great licks and energy from 30+ years ago. The band was dynamic and not done "on the cheap." Best rhythm section I ever heard - 2 drummers with his kunga player who played so good I question if he is from this planet! Rounding out the band are trumpet, trombone, bass, 2 singers, keyboards, guitar. A real bonus was seeing his son Salvadore Santana do 3 songs and play keyboards. He is the real deal. At one point Salvadore sung with a great lady vocalist and with Carlos' 2 vocalists there were 4 voices coming at us! Real nice ensemble work. Another highlight was "Tequila" featuring his trombone player who just slayed his solo!
Thanks Carlos for still having "the right stuff!"
