Judy was great, still sings amazingly.
To me though, the show was really compromised by the two young women of the opening act and then returning to accompany one song. They maintained these clownish facial expressions of possible rapture or choreographed joy that greatly diminished appreciating their singing. And admittedly, by "singing" I mean their commendable voice range and harmonizing, but the maladjusted sound system made it difficult to understand most of their lyrics. Visually they seemed as if they were performing at a child's birthday party or as pediatric dental assistants. But it seems to be part of their shtick. But they've been doing this with Judy for a couple years.
Who are they? A search finds that they are "Oakland Rain" and are critically acclaimed. Better heard than seen though for me.
All in all, it was enjoyable and comforting to hear Judy Collins' beautiful voice maintained in her 87th year and to sense also her sustained activist spirit in these troubled times buoyed by readings of her poetry.
Her hearing is also well preserved as she requested adjustments to the sound system midrange and even moved some of the audio components onstage herself.
Also, the audience was of many people even older than me and I'm 77, so there were no vocal outbursts (I almost yelled, "Yeah" more than once), but the audience's a cappella joining of "Amazing Grace" and Danny Boy" was beautiful.
Nice meeting you, Judy, and thanks for then and now.
