Meredith Music Festival 1997 in Meredith, Australia on Fri, 12 Dec 1997
Forgive me if this is slightly sketchy, this was over quarter century ago. First and only time i saw Snog. I'd got to meredith mid afternoon, fell asleep in my tent with my only concern being not to miss Dirty Three later that night. Woke up in a sweat panic, raced to the stage just as The Cruel Sea were finishing up, just in time for Dirty Three's full set. Phew! They blew me away of course, as always. Then, primed for the night, I waited around for this band Snog. By this point, the crowd seemed to morph from alt-rockers into the more rave-flavoured variety. From memory someone from the band snuck on stage, briefly twiddled some knobs, strummed a guitar and left the amphitheatre with a creeping drone and plumes of smoke machine smoke pouring over the crowd. Then two large prowling dogs were loosed onto the stage, one a doberman and the other a rottweiler(?). They roamed back and forth, clearly at ease with the noise, the lights and the teeming crowd, before stopping at the front of the stage and both howling over the audience to the backdrop of the droning feedback. This howling went for maybe a couple of miunutes or so before the band came out proper and launched into their first song. One of the most remarkable and surreal gig experiences I've witnessed. Snog were great too, but for me, the dogs stole the show.
