Stephens Auditorium in Ames, US on Fri, 15 Nov 1985
This was while ago, however one of the things I recall was that the opening act, 10,000 maniacs, was having a sound issue with, I believe, a mandolin, and the crowd started booing. Michael Stipe when he got on stage basically said that after that performance they would look for a new opening act. Per wikipedia the maniacs lasted 4 more shows. I still like the maniacs performance-save for the mandolin. Regarding REM they sounded great and being a newer fan I got to hear all the songs that I knew.
Fox Theatre Atlanta in Atlanta, US on Sat, 06 Dec 1980
I was there, but remember very little. My memories are:
What’s that guy with weird hair doing up there? I do believe I liked the show.
Stipe asking the audience to come up on the dance floor, the orchestra pit cover, young Atlanteans coming and dancing in new wave clothes, tiger print dresses and such. Sting during the Police’s set said we can’t use our dance floor because it’s unsafe. The orchestra pit cover had been removed.
The political song “ Body Count” which I quite enjoyed, Stip beginning it chanting Reagan! Reagan! Reagan! To start it.
As best I remember I was positively imptessed by the band but remember the Police’s show a little more.
I had no idea I was watching the first big concert of a legend in the making.
