Mott the Hoople on Sat, 25 May 1974
Mott the Hoople fan reviewOne of the first and best rock concerts of the dozens and dozens I went to as a teen. The Allen was a relatively small venue, approaching a very large highschool or college auditorium. Seating was first come first serve. The tickets cost a whopping $6 each and were sold as under counter sales at various "hippy" stores (records, clothing, curiosity, book) boutiques of the era. The was no ticket master to scrape 50% off the top... Musically they were as good as or better than the radio, if you get my drift. "Spot on" as the Brits might say. (sometimes live just plain sucks...that's just the truth. Vocal chords get stressed, finger get jammed, backs get sore, hangovers do their damage, etc) I've been to some pretty sobering concerts over the years) The light show was pretty good as I recall, I had been to a few concerts and seen many on tv, but it was the first time I saw such an (at the time) elaborate "light show" on stage.
Oh, btw, Golden Earring was originally scheduled to act as front band, but the story goes (or went at the time) that their bass player had OD'd, so they were replaced by some no-name third tier group called "Kansas" who played a song that later went a bit "viral" called "dust in the wind"
I've been to probably 50 or 60
rock concerts" since ~1971, and of them, I'd rank this in the top 5.
