Although we lived in London, my schoolfriend and I could only get tickets for this gig. My dad drove us all the way to Ipswich, and we arrived so early, like 3pm. But we hung around the back and caught Paul for an autograph straight off the tour bus. At the age of 16 then, it was incredibly exciting. I had been a Jam fan late on, not a parka-wearing hard-core mod, but the switch to the Cafe Bleu jazz sound, Paris Match EP, I was swooning. I don't remember much except it was flawless performance, loud, intensely tunes and new sounds and beats. Paul with slicked back hair and a pin-striped suit. I can't remember Billy Bragg, but I recall the Questions, who moved strangely like serpents. I think my Dad drove all the way home, had a cup of tea, then drive back to Suffolk to pick us up.
