Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny drew from his stellar 40 plus year career to deliver an adventurous set at Melbourne's Palais Theatre on Friday night. Accompanied by a most inspiring and committed Antonio Sanchez on drums, Gwilym Simcock on piano and Linda May oh Han on double bass, they ventured into the night with confidence and verve that almost new no bounds. Metheny began the night seated with his twin-neck acoustic guitar for a focused delivery of lucid grace noted and sparkling Kyoto-type sounds. It wasn't long before he was joined by his band fuelled by a special chemistry. Stretching back to the lead off track from his 1989 album Letter From Home , Have You Heard. With dynamics in the set highlighted by Sanchez"s drumming and Gwilym's piano sounds the night became more adventurous by the minute. Whether they were rocking with crazy intent on Metheny's and Sanchez's take on Trignometry from Metheny's Song X album where his guitar synth sounds muted and agitated the original horn sounds of the late Ornette Coleman or with another reflection on As Falls Witchita So Falls Witchita Falls, the set was at times breath taking. Ending with an acoustic blend from A Quiet Night prior to the standing ovation encore, Pat Metheny at The Palais was indeed a triumph of sound. Steve Scott
